Connect ChatGPT to pdf-mcp to create, inspect, and edit PDFs in a conversation. You need a pdf-mcp account and developer-mode access in ChatGPT. Availability depends on your account and workspace policy.
Connect
-
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Security and login and enable Developer mode.
-
Open Plugins, select +, and enter
pdf-mcpas the name. -
Under Connection, use this public MCP server URL:
Plain texthttps://api.pdf-mcp.io/mcp -
Create the connection and choose OAuth if prompted for an authentication method.
-
Complete the pdf-mcp browser sign-in, select your workspace, and approve access.
-
Review the discovered tools, then add the connection from the tools menu in a new chat.
These steps follow OpenAI’s ChatGPT connection guide. The link above opens ChatGPT; it does not install or authorize the server automatically.
Authentication
pdf-mcp supports automatic client registration and OAuth. Leave fixed client credentials empty unless your workspace specifically requires a pre-registered client.
Use OAuth for this connection. ChatGPT’s remote MCP connection does not accept a custom API-key header; see OpenAI’s MCP authentication guide.
Try it
With pdf-mcp enabled for the chat, ask:
Use pdf-mcp to create a one-page PDF titled “Hello from ChatGPT”. Store it and return the browser view link.
Review and approve any requested tool action. Generation uses the connected workspace’s credits.
Troubleshooting
- Developer mode is missing: Check whether your account and workspace administrator permit it.
- Tools are missing after connecting: Refresh the connection and start a new chat with pdf-mcp selected.
- OAuth callback error: If fixed credentials are required, register the exact callback URI ChatGPT displays under OAuth Apps.
See MCP troubleshooting for credit and permission errors.
